Sigourney
Weaver and Jennifer Love Hewitt star in
this comedy about mother-daughter con artists who swindle their way
through life and marriage. Mother Max (Weaver) has been married 13
times and, as we see with husband #13 Dean Cummano (Ray Liotta),
has managed to divorce them all for large settlements by having daughter/accomplice
Page (Love Hewitt) -- pretending to be a secretary/housekeeper/etc.--
lure them into cheating after the wedding. But Page is tired of being
in her mother’s shadow, and while pulling what is to be their
last con as a duo on wealthy tobacco heir William Tensy (Gene
Hackman), Page tries pulling a con of her own on the side
with unassuming yet potentially wealthy bar owner Jack (Jason
Lee). But things start to fall apart when both women start
losing control of their scams – and their feelings.
This is director David
Mirkin’s second feature film (after Romy and
Michele’s High School Reunion and executive producing
The Simpsons), and he has succeeded in making an entertaining,
well-written comedy. Sigourney Weaver gives another good comedic
performance reminiscent of her roles in Galaxy Quest and
Dave. Jennifer Love Hewitt (best known for the I Know
What You Did Last Summer films and TV’s Party of
Five) also does well in her first comedic role; and Gene Hackman,
Ray Liotta (GoodFellas, Hannibal), and Jason Lee (Almost
Famous, Chasing Amy) are worthy foils for the women. Overall,
this is a surprisingly enjoyable film with strong women’s
roles and lots of plot twists that keep you interested! |
