The Core has done almost everything it could to sabotage
itself in the American box office. Its release date was delayed
(from November 2002), its trailer is terrible, and its scenes in
the first third of the film showing the Space Shuttle crashing hit
a little too close to home. As a result, I predict this film will
not do very well – which is a shame, because it is actually
quite an entertaining and interesting film! Its sci-fi doomsday
premise is that the earth’s inner core has stopped rotating,
causing the planet’s electromagnetic field to deteriorate,
which has instantaneous, horrible consequences. U.S. government
officials scramble to resolve the crisis and assemble a team of
top scientists to travel to the earth’s core to try to restart
its rotation.
There are some
hurdles to overcome while watching the film, the largest being the
fantastical premise. But if you run with it, the film is surprisingly
good. The actors, including Oscar-winner Hilary Swank,
Aaron Eckhart, Delroy Lindo, Stanley
Tucci, and Alfre Woodard, make the most
of the often scientific but sometimes quite humorous dialogue they
are given, and the special effects are well-done. The world-destruction
scenes are especially realistic and gripping. Of all of the doomsday
films out there, The Core reminded me most of Deep
Impact, but I thought this film did a better job of balancing
the sci-fi with the human interest elements of the story. Overall,
this film may not shake you to the core, but it will keep you entertained
and maybe even give you some things to think about after the fact.
