Lüneburg
is 60 km SE of Hamburg and a great place for a Christmastime daytrip. |

| The
Markt in Lüneburg, where one of the town's Weihnachtsmarkts (Christmas markets) was set
up. There has been a marketplace here for over 1000 yrs. |

| Dad
Brown took this lovely photo of the 14th century St. Johanniskirche, whose 106 meter spire
leans by 2.2 meters. |

| The
Industrie- und Handelskammer building on Am Sande was built in 1548 in the Renaissance style.
When we were there, the building had a Weihnachtsmarkt at its base. |
 |
| One
of the many attractions at the Weihnachtsmarkt at the Markt was a Christmas train for kids.
These two boys definitely seemed to have fun! |

| A
view down Am Sande, with the St. Johanniskirche on the left. Some of the buildings along the
right of the photo have bulging facades (especially at the top). This was due to incompetence:
artisans using gypsum plaster as mortar didn't maintain a uniform drying temperature, leaving
the mortar susceptible to water absorption. This caused the plaster to swell, resulting in
a "beer-bellied" look. |

| The
Rathaus (town hall) with a large Christmas decoration in front of it. The Rathaus was begun
in the 13th century and rebuilt in the 14th and 15th centuries. |
