We spent the day before the wedding in and near Heidelberg, just a short drive from the Odenwald.
A classic view of Heidelberg, with the castle on the left, the Heiliggeistkirche (church) on the right, and the Alte Brücke (bridge) in front.
A lovely Baroque statue of the Virgin Mary on the Kornmarkt with the Schloß Heidelberg (castle) rising majestically behind.
A view of the city from the Schloß, with the Heiliggeistkirche on the right and the Neckar river on the left.
The lovely Heidelberg Rathaus (town hall), which was the scene of weddings every half hour on the Friday we were there (hence the balloons on the left)!
A view of the moat and remaining buildings from the mostly ruined Schloß Heidelberg (castle). The oldest parts of the castle date from the 15th century. Nowadays, the castle houses an Apothekenmuseum (Apothecary Museum) and hosts an open-air theater festival in August.
Another feature of the castle are the Großes Faß (Big Barrel) and the Kleines Faß (Small Barrel), both enormous wine barrels. The Großes Faß above can hold 49,000 gallons (220,000 liters) of wine.
