We
stayed in the ski town of Braunlage during our Harz Mountains trip. |

view of the ski jump that was closed during the Cold War: Braunlage (and the jump itself)
was in the West, but jumpers would have landed in the East. |

peruses the many signs on the Wurmberg (Braunlage's ski mountain) hiking trail. Braunlage
got a snowfall on our second day. |

| One
of the hiking trails near the bottom of the Wurmberg features many cute figurines cut out
of tree trunks. Here, Kirsten imitates the wooden gnome to her right. |
 |
| The
highest mountain in the Harz is the Brocken (1142 m or 3750 ft high). The easiest way to get
to the peak is to take a steam train like the one above (although we didn't have time to make
the trip). |
