Our base for exploring Lake Constance was Meersburg, a lovely village on the German side of the lake.
A panoramic view of Meersburg from the lake. The tower in the middle is the Catholic church; the large bulding on the right is the Neues Schloß (palace).
The turret of the Zum Bären hotel and restaurant (which we ate at) on the left with the distinctive Obertor (Upper Gate) on the right.
The lovely interior of the Neues Schloß (New Palace), which was partly built by Balthasar Neumann, the leading German architect of the 18th century. The palace also hosts rotating exhibits; they had an interesting Dalí exhibit while we were there.
The picture-postcard view of the Altes Schloß (old palace) and Lake Constance from the vineyards above town. The Altes Schloß is Germany's oldest inhabited castle.
A view from the Unterstadt (Lower Town) up the path to the Oberstadt (Upper Town) with the tower of the Altes Schloß in the upper right. The lower town is about 150 feet below the upper town and contains a main street with lots of hotels and restaurants along the water. The upper town is car-free and has many twisting narrow lanes lined by half-timbered houses and baroque buildings.
One of the many statues in Meersburg. Meersburg is a very old town, said to have been founded in the year 628 by Dagobert, king of the Franks.
