September 11, 2001, is a day that none of
us will ever forget. We saw images of
horror and images that made us proud.
Here are some of the latter . . . |

 |
| One of the reactions to the attacks of Sep. 11 was
an amazing amount of patriotism. Nowhere was
this more evident than on the Chicago's South
Side, where almost every house was flying a flag. |

 |
 |
 |
| A reaction that surprised us was
stores putting patriotism ahead of
commercialism. About 2/3
of the store marquees we saw in
Chicago and South Bend had messages like the one above on them. |

The Notre Dame fooball game
scheduled for Sep. 15 was postponed,
so the one we attended on Sep. 22 was
the first after the attacks. As we entered the stadium, each person was
given one of the signs shown above.
Everyone then held them up when
the bands marched in and played
God Bless America and the National
Anthem. What a powerful sight! |
 |
| We had been scheduled to fly to Colorado on Sep.
12, which, of course, didn't happen because all of
the airports were shut down until Sep. 14. After
three cancellations, we finally went to O'Hare on
Sep. 15 and encountered the line above. What was
amazing, though, was how patient and friendly
everyone was. And, yes, we did get out that day! |
