The Panama Canal is an amazing feat of architecture that spans 50 miles.
Our ship enters the first set of locks, the Gatun Locks. Each lock is 110 ft wide and 1000 ft long; our ship fit easily length-wise, but at 101 ft wide, it was pretty close on the sides!
Our first glimpse of the buoys leading into the Canal from the Atlantic Ocean. A diagram of the Canal is at the top of the page.
The Panama Canal Authority main building. For interesting information about the Canal, see their website at www.pancanal.com. We say goodbye to the tugboats helping us through the Gatun Locks and enter Gatun Lake.
Here we are entering the second set of locks, the Pedro Miguel Locks, and look across Miraflores Lake to the last set of locks, Miraflores Locks, which lead to the Pacific Ocean.
Our ship passes under the Bridge of the Americas on our way out to the Pacific Ocean. The bridge was the final link that allows someone to drive all the way from South America to North America.
