After 7 years of marketing research consulting
with Kraft Foods, including 2 years of running the ACNielsen business
with Kraft in Germany, Jim decided it was time to move on from the
world of Tombstone Pizza, Macaroni & Cheese and Milka Chocolate.
In November, he accepted a position with an ACNielsen sister company,
ACNielsen BASES (known in short
as BASES). The company specializes in new product testing &
forecasting (pre-launch), and is growing internationally at an unbelievable
rate.
To help manage BASES’ growth, Jim will be
leading the start-up of a new BASES office in Hamburg – right
now there are established offices in Oxford (England) and Brussels
(Belgium), and new offices in Paris (2002), Milan (2003) and Hamburg
(2003). After 2 years, BASES thinks the Hamburg office will house
15-25 people with clients from all over western and eastern Europe.
Jim thinks it is going to be an amazing opportunity to participate
in what is really a start-up situation.

As
she had planned when quitting The Weinstein Organization in 2000,
Kirsten finally started back to school in graphic and web design.
She is in the midst of completing a Graphic and Web Design Certificate
program through the online school Sessions.edu.
She has already completed classes such as Intro to Web Design, HTML
Basics, and Illustrator by Example, and is in the middle of Dreamweaver
I (which is what she has used to create this new website!), which
means she is 12 lessons into the 69-lesson Certificate (i.e., she
has a long way to go!). She is really enjoying the classes and learning
a lot, and heartily recommends the school to anyone interested in
design!
Kirsten has
also kept busy doing “pro-bono” freelance graphic design
(meaning she’s volunteering because she doesn’t have
the work permit to get paid in Germany) in the last year. Her projects
have included compiling and laying out a new 300-page English language
songbook for our parish here in Hamburg, doing the layout and design
for a 100-page book for the American Women’s Club in Hamburg
called Bloom Where You’re Planted, designing pages
for the American Women’s
Club website, and creating a logo and newsletter for our Hamburg
Toastmasters club. Finally, Kirsten still writes articles and
film reviews for the American Women’s Club magazine, Currents,
as well as the Hamburg English language tourist publication Top
