We spent our last day in the west in County Mayo on the way to Croagh Patrick.
The lovely Killary Harbour on the border between Counties Galway and Mayo. Killary Harbour is 45 m deep in the center and the only fjord in Ireland
The colorful main street of Westport, a town demolished and rebuilt under the design of 18th century architect James Wyatt.
The Octagon Monument in Westport. A memorial was originally erected herre in 1845 of a local banker, but the statue was beheaded during the Civil War, after which it was removed. This current statue of St. Patrick complete with serpent-entwined staff was erected in 1990.
One of the lovely bridges spanning the River Carrowbeg in Westport. Westport was named Ireland's tidiest town in 2001 and the tourist board has designated it a Heritage Town.
The ethereal Doolough (Dark Lake) Valley on the southestern edge of County Mayo, with a memorial on the left. The memorial is in remembrance of 600 men, women and children who walked through that valley during the Famine in hopes that the landlord of a nearby Lodge would offer them food. The landlord refused, and 400 of the travellers died from hunger and exposure on the return journey.
The haunting National Famine Memorial, situated across from Croagh Patrick. The Memorial commemorates those who died during the 1845-1849 Famine.
