We spent two days in Athens seeing the sights and dodging the Olympics construction!
Jim and Kirsten in front of the Olympic Cauldron at the Panathenean Stadium, the site of the 1896 Olympic Games (see below for more flame info.).
A view of Lykavittos Hill in the background, looking very small next to the Temple of Olympian Zeus in the foreground.
Jim doing some shopping in the Plaka. The Plaka is the oldest section of Athens and is mostly closed to car traffic. It is now quite a trendy area and is filled with cafes, restaurants, and tourist shops.
On our second day in Athens we took the funicular to the top of Lykavittos Hill, the highest of the eight hills around Athens. Here is the view southwest, which includes the Acropolis and the sea.
The flags in front of the Panathenean Stadium. The 2004 Olympic flame started its journey in March after a ceremonial lighting of the torch at Ancient Olympia. After travelling around the Peloponnesian peninsula, the flame arrived at the Panathenean Stadium on March 31, 2004. The torch will then travel the world before coming back to Athens to stay in July 2004.
Jim at the top of Lykavittos Hill, with the Greek flag and the Church of Agios Giorgos (Saint George). There is also a cafe/restaurant up there with wonderful views!
