Argolis was the cradle of the Mycenaean civilization from 1600 to 1200 BC.
Constitution Square in Nafplio, Argolis' second largest city, the first capital of independent Greece and one of the Peloponnese's most romantic towns.
One of the picturesque little streets in Nafplio. The Old Town is a maze of narrow streets lined with old buildings and mansions.
One of the most renowned of Greece's ancient sites is the Theatre of Epidavros. It is one of the best-preserved classical Greek buildings and is known for its amazing acoustics. It seats up to 14,000 people and is still used for live performances during the Hellenic Festival in July and August.
High atop the hill is the Palamidi Fortress outside of Nafplio, as seen through the cactus and across the Argolic Gulf from behind the Akronafplia Fortress.
This rock at the ruins of Ancient Mycenae seems to have inspired Dad Brown to try to sacrifice Jim (luckily he didn't succeed!). According to Homer's poems, Mycenae was founded by Perseus, the son of Danae and Zeus. At the time of King Agamemnon (brother-in-law to Helen of Troy), the Mycenean Royal House was the most powerful in Greece.
