Dresden
is much like Berlin: a city under construction. But its beauty still
shines through. |

|
| Dresden
at dusk. The main buildings in town are all lit up with different
colors, making a lovely picture. The silhouettes include the baroque
Hofkirche and the neo-Renaissance Schloß (palace). |

| A
night photo of the Münzgasse, a street full of restaurants and
shops that literally lights up at night. We had tapas at one of the
cafes. |

|
| The
neo-Renaissance Neues Rathaus (town hall), topped by a golden statue
of Hercules and with an interesting Communist-era statue out front. |
 |
|
| The
area by the Hauptbahnhof (main train station). Much like Potsdamer
Platz in Berlin, it is a concrete expanse with cranes everywhere,
having had to be rebuilt after WWII and last year's Elbe river flood. |

| The
plan for the redeveloping of the area around the Frauenkirche, shown
in an exhibition in temporary housing right next to the church. The
communists left the rubble of the church as a "war memorial",
but in 1992 the people of Dresden banded together to start the refitting
of the 10,000 pieces of the church, which is expected to be finished
in 2006.. |

|
| The
nearly finished Frauenkirche, which was almost completely destroyed
by a bomb on Feb 13, 1945 (see photo to the right), and has been undergoing
rebuilding for over 10 years now. |
