Bratislava, Slovakia's capital, was the least westernized of the places we visited.
Bratislava Castle, the New Bridge, and the Communist-era suburban housing behind it, as seen from the hill leading to the Slavín War Memorial.
A view of our hotel, the eclectic Hotel Spirit. It was only a ten minute walk from the train station, and Internet access was free!
The lovely statue of Alžbeta Durínska in front of Bratislava Castle. The castle was first built in the 1st century, burned down in 1811, and was reconstructed between 1953 and 1962.
The neo-Baroque Slovak National Theater (SNT), built in 1886, with Ganymede's Fountain in front of it. The SNT is the site of theater, opera, and ballet productions.
Jim relaxing at the cafe on the grounds of Bratislava castle. We had some wonderful appetizers and cappuccinos here while enjoying a panoramic view of Bratislava.
The top of a lovely church on one side of the Námestie SNP square. Many of the impressive buildings in Bratislava were built during the reign of Maria Teresa of Austria (1740-80).
